Debt Review Awards Gala 2017
The Annual Debt Review Awards is a modest evening gala where people from across the industry walk the red carpet and attend an awards ceremony which recognises the top companies in the industry as well as individuals who are working hard to make debt review work. This year the Gala evening was held in Gauteng at the Wanderers Club in Ilovo. The event was made possible by generous sponsorships from companies such as Nedbank, Hyphen PDA, ONE SURE, Capitec Bank, FNB, Consumer Friend, ABSA, DCM NPDA, DC Partner, Kim Armfield Attorneys, Maximus, DCASA and others.
Guests arrived to walk the red carpet and join other leading Debt Counsellors, Credit Providers, Attorneys, The teams from the 3 NCR registered PDAs as well as trainers and members of the National Consumer Tribunal and National Credit Regulator.
The host for the evening was Mr. Alan Committee who kept the audience amused and on their toes (Especially Jeandre’ who had to riverdance by the end of the evening. Alan broke the ice with his irreverent comments and hilarious jokes. No guest was safe as he explained how South Africans are a hardy bunch who can cope with change like no other people can.
Guests were able to enjoy both speeches and presentations from well-known industry figures such as Chris van der Straaten (Hyphen PDA), Mr Hary Greene (BASA) and Mr Frans Haupt (“the Prof”). These speakers have been involved in the industry for many years and were able to take the audience through 10 years of debt review from their unique perspective. The National Credit Act turned 10 years old this month and it was interesting to hear about the “good old” bad old days when debt review first began.
Guests were also treated to interviews with clients of debt counselling firm NDA (National Debt Advisors) who have recently finished their debt review journey and are now debt free. It was heart warming to hear their honest expressions of relief and joy at having successfully completed the debt review process. Standard Bank surprised the audience and the two interviewees with generous gift vouchers of R2500 each to help them get started in their new debt free life.
Insurance firm ONE|SURE who have products specifically for consumers under debt review were at the Awards and in a joint award section they handed out awards to two individuals who are making significant contributions to the debt review process and industry. The winners on the night were nominated by means of the industry-wide peer review and they were not only awarded but also received generous prize money of R7500 each. The winner for her significant contribution to the debt review process was Mz Denise Hartley (Nedbank) and Mr. Neil Roets (Debt Rescue) was awarded the significant contribution to the Debt Review Industry Award.
‘The results of the Peer Review were revealed on the night in an awards ceremony’
Over the last half a year, members of the debt review industry have progressively participated in an industry peer review. Companies on opposite sides of the industry got to review the performance of their peers. Debt Counsellors got to rate credit providers and credit providers likewise got to review how Debt Counsellors were doing. The results of the Peer Review were revealed on the night in an awards ceremony overseen by Auditors BKF, represented by Mr Barry Fuchs himself on the night.
IDM Group & Consumer Friend Retain Top Spots
Awards were presented by several industry personalities to those companies who have excelled in this year’s peer review. The first section of the Awards focused in on how Debt Counsellors had reviewed credit providers. The names of all those firms who had done well in the peer review were revealed and anticipation grew to find out which of these firms had taken the top position as reviewed by Debt Counsellors. The top winners on the night were: Bayport Financial Services, Consumer Friend on behalf of their clients (winners last year as well) and MFC, in the very close and hotly contested vehicle finance category. The awards are not given in relation to how the brand conducts itself but rather relate to how these firms handle debt review matters specifically. African Bank were recognised for the efforts they have made to raise their level of service in this arena in recent months. The top winners in the highly competitive Bank section went to Capitec Bank.
‘It was a clean sweep for Payment Distribution Agency Hyphen PDA’
It was a clean sweep for Payment Distribution Agency Hyphen PDA as they scooped up awards for Payment Distribution and Customer Service as reviewed by both credit providers and Debt Counsellors. They managed to come out with the highest ratings among the three NCR registered PDAs again this year. This was a repeat of 2016 where they also took the top spot.
Debt Counsellor Awards
The final category of the night was the awards to the top 15 debt counselling firms in South Africa. Though there are hundreds of firms some firms were rated very highly by the various credit providers taking part in the industry peer review.
