Bank Strike Set For Friday 27th

SA’s biggest financial workers union SASBO has a countrywide members strike planned for Friday 27th September 2019. They say they plan to shut down the banks, ATMs and even online banking in an effort to inconvenience bank management and customers.

Cosatu has said that some of their members will also join the strike and join protest action planned for major cities across SA.

The conflict revolves around retrenchments in the industry where the banks have closed dozens of branches throughout the country since computers are now doing a lot of the work and consumers are doing more and more online and cell phone banking. Standard Bank recently decided to close 91 branches and Nedbank are said to be planning to retrench or move 1500 staff.

When asked if this will affect the debt review departments some managers said it will not but that was earlier in the month and with the date drawing closer it remains to be seen how things will be disrupted.
