DTI & DCASA

The Department for Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) have been in contact with the Debt Counsellors Association of South Africa discussing matters relating to debt review.

One of the “hot topics” has, of course, been fees (for Debt Counsellors and the PDAs) and the need for these to be looked at.

But a further opportunity has now been presented to DCASA to present general suggestions in regard to the National Credit Act as a whole (focusing on debt counselling and debt restructuring).

As such, DCASA has called on all members to make submissions in regard to items that members think need attention in the future and suggestions on how these could be accomplished.

Submissions are being made this week and will be considered and refined next week by the DCASA NEC, who will then send the combined submission on to the DTIC for consideration.

It is hoped that such information gathering efforts by the DTIC could lead to future policy decisions or even amendments to the NCA one day.

It is nice to see the DTIC so actively engaged with Debt Counsellors, with a delegation from the DTIC recently, even having visited one of the largest debt counselling practices in South Africa (members of the National Debt Counsellors Association) for a guided tour and discussion.
