New R2 & R5 Available in 2021
SARB Issue Commemorative Coins
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) release special coins from time to time to celebrate significant events. This year the SARB are once again celebrating 25 years of Constitutional Democracy in SA.
To mark the anniversary, and its own 100 year anniversary, the SARB has released both a commemorative R2 and a R5 coin.
The R2 Coin
The R2 features imagery that calls to mind children’s rights, the right to education and environmental rights. (See Above) The coin is reminiscent of the 2019 special releases from the SA Mint.
The R5 Coin
The R5 (which actually officially became available in Jan of this year) celebrates 100 years of the SARB and features tiny representations of famous coins issued by the SARB over the years such as the laughing Nelson Mandela coin. Can you believe it the SARB has been around since 1921?
Back in 2019, a series of special coins relating to the 25th anniversary of constitutional democratic were released. Check out more about that story here
Be sure to keep an eye out when these coins enter circulation. The time may come when the R2 and R5 go the way of the old smaller coins and it might be nice to arrange to keep one safe at the bottom of a drawer somewhere.
