Dealing with Debt

Often couples (or families) who are going through tough times financially like to pretend that nothing out of the normal is going on. This only adds to the stress of trying to deal with debt. It is far better to talk about your debt and steps you are taking to deal with it in a calm manner. However if you have been in this situation or are in such a situation right now you will know that what starts as a casual chat about funds can quickly turn into an argument about who is wasting money.

How can you avoid this?

TIP 1

Set a regular time each week or each month to talk about your finances. Choose a time when you will be relaxed and not tired or busy. It is not a good idea to do this while eating or watching TV. Dedicate time for your talk and don’t get distracted.

Doing this monthly (or weekly) could tie in to your reviewing your budget. If you are able to do this after payday it will allow you to plan ahead for the coming weeks. Because it is a regular arrangement it will help diffuse any tension that might otherwise come up.

Perhaps the most important facet is to avoid the blame game. It is important not to accuse your partner of any wrongdoing and to rather to try to be supportive.

Don’t let the scheduled conversation go on for hours. Rather be brief and specific.

Regular discussions will allow you to track your progress each month. Try to remain focused on dealing with your debt as a family. Your partner is not the problem – your debt is. Work together to solve it.
