DCASA Debt Counselling Fee Proposal

Back in 2011 some changes were made to the amount Debt Counsellors charged (as a n industry norm) to consumers. That was some time ago and it is reported that the Debt Counselling process is now much more complicated and time consuming.

At the recent DCASA Annual Conference DCASA presented the results of some of their research into the length of time each part of the process takes. The results were astounding. Debt Review now takes more than twice as long (2.5) to conclude (in terms of work hours). Despite increases in running costs and time needed to help consumers the fees have not changed for years now. The research showed that not only are Debt Counsellors paying their staff less (meaning a lower level of expertise?) but also taking home less themselves. This has prompted many to leave the industry as they say it is not financially viable.

Call to Action

DCASA are now calling on their members (and others who helped with the research) to make further comment based on the results they found. They have distributed a core proposal strategy document and called for comments by the 10th of November 2014
