December can be all fun and games, but it is good to remember that ‘Januworry’ is coming.
Sometimes called the “longest month of the year”, January often brings extra costs and concerns for households.
Mostly this is because people tend to overspend in December, blowing their reserves or overshooting their planned budget. This leaves you strapped for cash in January.
Parents Face Scary School Costs
Parents, in particular, feel the effects of school starting up again in January. This brings additional costs that tend to all pile up in this one month.
For example, some schools require a big deposit or fee right at the start of the year. Pay up or your kid can’t get into classes.
Then there are also added costs like new uniforms, new shoes (why do their feet keep growing so fast?), and additional outfits for sports or after school activities. And if your kid is wanting to take up a new sport or activity, there may be some equipment costs associated with that. It is surprising how much tennis racquets and hockey sticks cost.
And then there are the usual extra costs like replacing lost stationery, buying textbooks, paying towards school transport and more.
Don’t Worry, This January
All in all, January hits the wallet or purse pretty hard.
So, while it is great to have much deserved fun over the year end, please do keep in mind that January is just around the corner.
It may mean exercising a little restraint over the year end or breaking open the piggy bank (you have been saving, right?) but with some advanced thought you can get 2026 off to the right start.
