I like to think of myself as a disappointed optimist.
I always hope for the best and then feel disappointed when people make bad choices. Fortunately, over time, I have learned to anticipate some of that disappointment, so it does not hurt quite as much. But that does not mean I do not feel sorry for the people affected by those choices.
For example, just when we all thought the war in the Middle East was winding down, petrol prices might return to normal and we could get on with our lives, things took another unexpected twist. It disappoints me, but these days it also feels par for the course.
Good news can sometimes be hard to find. Fortunately, for those repaying debt, the repo rate at least remained unchanged this month. Stability is better than another increase, but if you are already struggling, do not simply expect things to somehow get better on their own. Hope is valuable, but it works best when supported by practical action.
In this issue, we want to help you make a success of your debt review. We have gathered five things that can help you do exactly that.
These are the, ironically, well known “secrets” of consumers who successfully complete the entire debt review process, even when unexpected expenses, payment problems and other snags come along. They are not complicated tricks or shortcuts. They are practical habits and attitudes that can help you stay focused and keep moving forward.
We also have our usual selection of updates, news and practical advice to help you better understand your finances and the debt review process.
Pessimists always expect the worst. Unfortunately, constantly thinking that way can influence the choices you make and may even cause you to make a difficult situation worse.
‘It is far nicer to have a positive outlook for the future’
It is far nicer to have a positive outlook for the future. That does not mean pretending that problems do not exist. It means recognising the challenges, preparing for possible setbacks and continuing to believe that your situation can improve.
Perhaps being a disappointed optimist is not so bad after all. You may occasionally be disappointed, but at least you keep looking forward and working towards something better.
Before debt review, that may have seemed impossible. You probably only had negative experiences with your credit providers’ collections agents and were really struggling to pay off your debts. But if you have entered debt review, then it is actually realistic to have an optimistic outlook.
Stick with the process. Continue making your payments and apply the things you learn that can help you make a success of debt review. Before you know it, you will be debt free.
