As of April 2023, Eskom will be charging an extra 18.65% on their rates. So, get ready to pay nearly 20% more on your electricity bill.
In some good news for vulnerable consumers, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved a lower electricity tariff increase for low-income households. Instead of a 18.65% increase they will have a 10% increase.
This means that township residents and those living in rural areas won’t be hit quite as hard by the price hike.
Still, municipalities will have to pay the full 18.6% tariff increase on their bulk electricity purchases from Eskom regardless of what they end up charging their different residents. This basically forces them to cover some of the cost.
