PACSA Food Barometer Reveals Recent Price Raise

large shopping trolley blackThe Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (Pacsa) regularly do a price tracking exercise where they buy food to feed a family of seven. The objective is to compare the current cost with what it used to cost for the same nutritional value (they always try to use very similar items and track the increase in costs).

‘That’s nearly a 10% price increase in just a few months’

From September 2017 till April 2018 the cost to nutritiously feed a family of seven went up from R2 886 to R3 144. That’s nearly a 10% price increase in just a few months.

Recently, (March/April 2018) the cost of the food items considered in the Pacsa Food Basket actually dropped slightly but then the VAT hike hit home and resulted in a higher total cost of another R4.

If you are struggling to cover your food bill and have begun to use credit to shop for food then you need to talk to your local Debt Counsellor.
