International rating agency Standard and Poor’s Global has raised SA’s foreign currency long term rating.
You may have guessed that that is good news but you may be unsure what exactly it means and why it is good news.
Similar to your own credit report and your personal credit score, this international rating is a score that shows how risky it is for international investors to lend money to South Africa in foreign currencies like US Dollars or Euros. The higher the rating, the safer the country is seen to be, which normally helps bring down borrowing costs and builds confidence.
‘The higher the rating, the safer the country is seen to be’
The agency (S&P) now is saying that SA’s economic growth outlook has improved and that government is managing its debt more tightly. They also see a better economic or financial picture overall, which helps to build trust in the country’s financial trajectory.
A big part of this upgrade comes from reduced risks at Eskom. As the power utility slowly stabilises with less corruption and less loadshedding, it puts less pressure on government finances. This makes it easier for South Africa to plan ahead and avoid unexpected financial shocks.
National Treasury is pretty chuffed and says that the rating upgrade shows that progress is being made to restore fiscal credibility and place the economy on a more sustainable growth path. In simple terms, it is a sign that things are improving, even if it is happening slowly. Progress is progress.
This Upgrade Matters
Why?
Well, it can mean lower borrowing costs for government, which frees up money for important services instead of heavily loaded debt repayments. It also encourages investors who want to buy South African bonds or put money into local projects.
For everyday folk like us, this increase in confidence can support business growth, create more jobs, and open better investment opportunities.
Overall, this rating upgrade which is the first in decades is an extremely positive step at a time when many South Africans are looking for signs of better things to come.
