People who struggle during debt review often focus on what has changed or what they think they have lost.
“I can’t buy things like I used to.” Old spending habits may have felt enjoyable in the moment, but they may also have helped create financial pressure.
“I feel trapped.” A budget can feel restrictive at first, especially if your spending was previously unplanned.
“I hate all the paperwork.” Documents, signatures and communication can feel frustrating when viewed as extra problems rather than part of the solution.
“I wish things would go back to normal.” But the old “normal” included unpaid accounts, collections calls, sleepless nights, stress and borrowing more and more to try cope.
“I can’t get more credit.” This may feel limiting, but taking on additional debt while already struggling with existing just creates bigger problems later.
The Result: People who focus on the past experience frustration and are more likely to miss communicating with their Debt Counsellor when they should, skip payments, lose motivation or fall for unrealistic promises and scams.
Looking backwards often makes the road ahead feel longer.
