They do a test with young kids where they offer them a cookie now, but then offer them another option. They tell them if they are prepared to wait, they can have two cookies later.
All they have to do is wait.
Most kids choose to eat the one cookie now, unable to wait in order to get double the cookies later.
Waiting is a skill we learn in life as we experience the benefits that come with giving things time.
Waiting & Debt Review
It can be a challenge to get back into a waiting mindset when starting debt review.
We live in an instant gratification generation, which is why credit is so popular. If you want it now, you do not have to wait. You can use money from your future self to get something now, it just costs you more.
After years and years of living without having to wait, making the switch to things like regularly saving, laybys, or just letting a few weeks or months go by before we can fix something or buy something is hard.
But for those who want to succeed at debt review, this is a critical skill to relearn.
Wait For It
If our brains love instant gratification and we are so used to it, can we change how we think about waiting?
There are two main steps when faced with a situation where waiting will help us.
Focus on the benefits that come with waiting, focus on how nice two cookies will be. Twice the pleasure, yummy!
Focus on the risks that come with rushing. How sad it would be to rush ahead and then experience problems as a result. You would not eat raw food before it is totally cooked would you? No, that would be bad for you, better to wait.
By doing these two simple things, when presented with situations that come along in debt review, you can train your brain to wait.
You can learn to not be impatient. To give things a few hours, days, weeks, or even months.
