The National Consumer Tribunal (NCT) has recently been placing even greater emphasis on engaging directly with stakeholders across the debt review industry.
Rather than simply focusing on its internal processes and waiting for matters to come before it, the Tribunal has increasingly been bringing together the right people to discuss challenges, exchange information and explore possible solutions. The NCT are taking their sassy approach to operating beyond their offices and out into the industry at large.
The idea is straightforward. By speaking directly to the people involved in a particular issue, the Tribunal is able to gain a clearer understanding of where obstacles exist, what is causing them and whether there are opportunities for collaboration.
For example, a discussion with a Debt Counsellor may highlight a practical challenge being experienced during the debt review process. Rather than viewing that concern in isolation, the Tribunal may then engage with one or more industry associations to better understand the wider context before discussing the same issue with a credit provider.
By following the issue through from different perspectives, the Tribunal is able to build a clearer picture of what is actually happening. Each conversation adds another piece to the puzzle, helping separate assumptions from facts and identifying where misunderstandings, process gaps or opportunities for improvement may exist.
‘This information can then be shared with relevant stakeholders’
This information can then be shared with relevant stakeholders, allowing future discussions to be based on evidence and a broader understanding of the issue rather than on individual experiences alone.
While this approach will not solve every challenge facing the industry, it reflects a more outward looking and collaborative style of engagement. By encouraging dialogue between stakeholders and facilitating the sharing of information, the Tribunal hopes to contribute to more informed discussions and, where possible, practical improvements to the debt review process.
