Confusion at the start of debt review is completely normal.
Nearly everyone who enters the process feels a little out of their comfort zone, a little out of their depth.
Making the decision to enter debt review is after all a pretty big deal. You are cutting yourself off from new credit and saying that the next few years are about becoming debt free.
That is not small.
That’s a serious commitment. Well done!
But that does not mean it will be easy or simple.
Let’s look at why debt review often feels confusing at first and why that does not mean something is wrong.
A Big Decision That Brings Big Change
When you enter debt review, you step into a new way of doing things.
There are new rules, new people involved, new debit orders and more.
There is a lot of “new”.
Even if your Debt Counsellor took the time to explain every new thing clearly, you may forget half of what was said by the time it happens. That is normal. Some of what is explained will only happen months later.
Debt review also has a lot of paperwork. You are going to see a lot of documents with words or terms you have never seen before.
New Words and Systems
Once you are in debt review, you will hear people talk about things that sound technical or unfamiliar.
Because you have never dealt with debt review before, it is completely normal to feel unsure when these terms are used. Eventually you will know what they all mean, it just takes time.
But as a rule, if you do not understand these terms at first, just ask for clarity.
Common Debt Review Terms Explained
PDA A Payment Distribution Agent. This is the company that receives your single monthly payment and splits it up to distributes money to all your credit providers.
Form 17.2 A formal notice that confirms you have been accepted into debt review.
Confirmatory Affidavit A signed statement confirming that you understand and agree with what has been submitted by the Debt Counsellor and Attorneys to the court on your behalf.
DebiCheck A system that confirms your debit order is authorised and valid.
It Feels Different When You Are in the Seat
Starting debt review is a bit like learning to ride a bicycle.
You may have seen others do it many times. But sitting on the seat yourself feels very different. It feels scary. You will feel nervous.
The first time you receive an SMS about a payment going to a PDA with a strange reference number, you may panic. The first time you receive a PDA statement, you may not understand why the figures do not match your banking app exactly.
You may expect things to move quickly, but legal and banking processes often take longer than you think. Fortunately, slow does not mean broken.
Like riding a bike, you will get used to it. You will master the skill as long as you keep moving forward.
Confusion Doesn't Mean Broken
It is important not to link your confusion with whether the process is working or not.
The truth is that you can feel unsure and the process can still be working exactly as it should. The two things are not linked.
Remember, debt review has helped hundreds of thousands of South Africans regain control of their finances. Do not assume something is wrong every time you do not understand something.
And please do not overreact when that happens. Reversing payments, avoiding your Debt Counsellor or trying to exit debt review without the full facts can cause serious problems that will be directly linked to your debt review falling apart.
Always chat to your Debt Counsellor if you have any questions.
Slow Down and Ask Questions
If you feel confused, take a moment before you react.
Make a note of the thing that’s worrying you.
Contact your Debt Counsellor and ask them to explain again.
There is nothing wrong with asking twice. You are not being silly. You need the information to make educated decisions. You are simply new to the process.
Take time to understand before making decisions. One idea is to read reliable information on trusted websites such as www.debtfreedigi.co.zaor www.dcasa.co.za. Be careful of advice from people who are not trained in this field. Your cousin who watched a few tiktoks is not a debt review expert.
The Confusion Will Fade
The good news is that the confusion fades.
Over time, the process will become routine. The unusual terms will become normal. The statements will make sense. In fact, you may get so used to it that the whole thing may even become boring.
That is usually a good sign that things are stable.
The start of debt review is a confusing time when many new and challenging things come your way. That’s normal.
If you are feeling confused, reach out to your Debt Counsellor.
Ask questions.
Ask them again.
Ask even more questions. Don’t be proud or shy.
In the end, we can assure you that the confusion will pass, as will your debt.
