Standard Bank's New SA CEO

Standard Bank has announced that David Hodnett will become the new Chief Executive of its South African operations, pending regulatory approval.

Hodnett is no stranger to the group. He has spent more than thirty years in the financial sector and has held several senior positions at Standard Bank since the early 2000s.

Most recently, he served as the Group’s Chief Risk Officer while also overseeing Corporate Affairs. His long service has given him deep insight into how the bank works and how it might continue to grow.

Sim Tshabalala, Chief Executive of Standard Bank Group, said the appointment shows the strength of the leadership pipeline within the bank. He praised David’s track record and described him as a leader with exceptional ability who has already made a big contribution to the wider financial services sector.

As part of the leadership changes, Thabani Ndwandwe, who joined the group back in 2004, will take over as Group Chief Risk Officer while continuing his role as South Africa Chief Risk Officer.

At the same time Lungisa Fuzile, who had been acting as interim head of Africa Regions and Offshore, has now been permanently appointed to that role.

‘South Africa remains the core of Standard Bank’s business’

South Africa remains the core of Standard Bank’s business. With trillions of rand in assets and earnings managed through the local operation, this leadership shift signals the group’s intent to build on their stability and preference for developing talent from within.
