NCR CEO Otsile Maseng spoke at the recent Debt Review Awards 2026 held in Cape Town in October.
This was his first public appearance addressing the industry at large.
Mr Maseng gave an impassioned 40-minute speech about the debt review industry, the NCR and his plans for the Regulator in the future.
In his opening, he spoke about meeting various stakeholders and how pleasantly surprised he had been at the love shown for debt review and the regulator.
He touched repeatedly on consumer protections and eradicating Debt Review Without Consent (DRWC), where some consumers might end up listed as under debt review without any true intention of going through with the process, or even without their full knowledge of what they were getting themselves into.
The NCR recently had an important matter before the National Consumer Tribunal taking action against one such practice where these illegal activities took place, and has had the principal Debt Counsellor deregistered and fined.
Mr Maseng also praised the Awards for recognising those who are setting the standard and encouraged the top rated Debt Counsellors and credit providers to lead the way as ambassadors for debt review.
