Normal Doubts

Debt review is often described as a journey, but perhaps it is more like climbing a mountain.

When you first begin the climb, you are full of determination. You feel fresh, you know where you want to go and every step takes you further away from the financial stress that brought you into debt review.

As you climb higher however, the path becomes steeper. You become tired, the summit disappears behind clouds. Progress seems slower than you hoped. It is often at this point that many people start asking themselves:

“Am I doing the right thing?”

or

“Did I choose the right Debt Counsellor?”

If you have asked yourself these questions, you are not alone.

Debt review is a process that often takes several years. During that time, there will almost certainly be moments when you doubt yourself, the process or even the people helping you.

It’s important to remember that these moments of doubt are a normal part of the journey, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

When Other People Make You Question Everything

One of the biggest sources of doubt often comes from other people.

A collections agent may phone and say that your Debt Counsellor is not really doing their job or a credit provider may encourage you to deal with them directly. Friends or family members (who have never experienced debt review themselves) may confidently offer advice about what they think you should do. You may even get calls from “a better Debt Counsellor.”

The problem is that none of these people really know your complete financial situation.

They do not know how much debt you started with. They do not know what agreements have already been reached with your credit providers. They do not know what progress has already been made, or what challenges you have already overcome.

Your Debt Counsellor does.

Before allowing other people’s opinions create doubt, have an open conversation with the person who does understand your financial journey.

The Internet Doesn't Know Your Story

We live in a world where almost every question or doubt can be matched by smart algorithms with an online answer.

Consumers often come across Facebook discussions, TikTok videos, YouTube advice, or articles making claims about debt review.

Some of this information is useful.

Some of it is simply wrong.

Even when the advice is accurate, it is still general advice. It is not tailored to your exact income, family responsibilities, court order, repayment history or take into account how far you have already come.

What works for someone else may not be appropriate for you.

Debt review is never one size fits all, every consumer’s financial situation is unique.

Good Advice Isn't Always Comfortable

Sometimes consumers start questioning their Debt Counsellor because they are being pushed to make changes that feel hard.

Perhaps your budget needs to be adjusted in uncomfortable ways.

Perhaps you don’t like the idea of being cut off from new credit.

Perhaps you have been encouraged to wait or make sacrifices that are inconvenient for a while, to focus on long term rather than day by day.

Nobody enjoys hearing difficult news.

However, a good Debt Counsellor is not there simply to tell you what you want to hear; their goal is to help you reach the finish line.

The advice that protects your future is not always the advice that feels easiest today.

Beware of Someone Offering an Easier Way

One of the greatest dangers comes when somebody unexpectedly contacts you with an exciting promise.

They may tell you they can reduce your monthly debt review payment.

They may claim they can get you out of debt review quickly, maybe right away (for a fee).

They may suggest that your current Debt Counsellor is doing something wrong and you should move over to their services.

They may even ask you to change your payment details.

When this happens, stop and ask yourself one simple question.

If these promises were really that easy to deliver, why would the Debt Counsellor who has spent years working on your case not already be offering you the same solution?

Empty Promises or Scams

Unfortunately, some people use unrealistic promises to trick consumers into moving their debt review to their company.

Others may even be trying to change payment details for dishonest reasons.

Changing Debt Counsellors on impulse can interrupt carefully planned payment arrangements, create confusion, result in additional costs and place years of carefully managed progress at unnecessary risk.

Even promises of lower monthly instalments deserve careful thought. Paying less each month usually means paying for longer. Debt does not simply disappear because someone says it will.

No legitimate shortcut can erase debt that still has to be repaid. Credit providers like to get their money back, after all.

Remember How Far You've Already Climbed

When climbing a mountain, there comes a point where you stop, catch your breath and look back.

Only then do you realise how far you have already come.

Debt review is much the same.

Perhaps several accounts have already been paid off.

Perhaps your outstanding balances are much lower than when you began.

Perhaps you have avoided legal action that once seemed inevitable.

Perhaps you have learned budgeting skills that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

Those achievements matter.

Do not let one tough month, one online post or one unexpected phone call make you forget the progress you have already made.

Talk Before You Act

If you ever begin wondering whether you have chosen the right Debt Counsellor, the first step should never be to make a sudden change.

Instead, make a phone call.

Arrange a meeting.

Ask your current Debt Counsellor questions.

Share your concerns honestly.

Request an update on your progress and discuss any fears you may have.

In most cases, an open conversation will answer many of the questions that have been troubling you.

Note:  There are occasions where changing Debt Counsellors may become genuinely necessary, such as when a Debt Counsellor retires, closes their practice or in other exceptional circumstances such as when you can’t reach them anymore, but changing because of pressure, false promises or an unsolicited phone call is rarely in a consumer’s best interests.

Keep Climbing

Every mountain has difficult sections.

There are moments when the path feels endless, and the summit seems impossible to reach. Those moments do not mean you are on the wrong mountain.

More often than not, they simply mean you are getting past the hard parts.

Debt review is built on trust, consistency and steady progress. Your Debt Counsellor has taken the journey with you, understands your financial circumstances and has already helped guide you through every stage of the process.

When doubt creeps in, resist the temptation to make a rushed decision.

Talk to the hard-working guide who has been climbing beside you and helping you from the beginning.

One conversation today could save you from making a decision that puts years of past hard work at risk.

Keep climbing.

The view from the top is worth it.
